MediaTek Supply Chain
MediaTek designs systems-on-chip without operating the wafer fabs that manufacture them. Its displayed network separates two capabilities around that model: TSMC and United Microelectronics operate foundries, while Arm develops processor intellectual property. A design input and a manufacturing input do different jobs.
Designing chips without owning wafer fabs
MediaTek develops chips for mobile devices, home entertainment, connectivity and connected products. Designing a system-on-chip and producing the physical semiconductor require different organizations and capabilities. That separation matters commercially: a chip design needs both a technology foundation and a path into physical production.
Foundry capability and processor intellectual property
- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company LimitedTaiwan | Supplier to MediaTek | #1 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
- United Microelectronics CorporationTaiwan | Supplier to MediaTek | #2 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
- Arm Holdings plcGB | Supplier to MediaTek | #3 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited and United Microelectronics Corporation appear as upstream relationships, alongside Arm Holdings plc. The first two provide foundry context; Arm provides semiconductor-IP context. These records do not imply that the two foundries can manufacture the same MediaTek design or that an Arm licensing agreement has any particular terms.
Three different capabilities around a chip designer
The network has three distinguishable layers around MediaTek: design technology, physical chip production and routes to device manufacturers. It is a broad view of how a fabless business connects to other companies, rather than a production map for one smartphone processor.
Device businesses and component distribution
- Xiaomi CorporationChina | MediaTek supplies this customer | #1 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.South Korea | MediaTek supplies this customer | #2 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
- WT Microelectronics Co., Ltd.Taiwan | MediaTek supplies this customer | #3 of 3 by available USD-normalized size
Xiaomi Corporation and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. add device businesses to the customer set. WT Microelectronics Co., Ltd. distributes electronic components, giving the displayed network a channel relationship as well. Component distribution and device production represent different routes from a chip designer to the products that ultimately contain semiconductors.
